Many schools assume that a student with a healthy subject average is safe. In Mathematics, that is often not true. A child can score 65% overall and still fail the next test because the next test is built around a weak strand, not the broad average.
The issue is not that averages are useless. The issue is that one number hides the pattern behind the result. A student may be strong in some units, weak in others, and the next paper may over-sample the weak problem area. When schools evaluate only the average, they can miss the exact reason the learner is struggling.
Why a decent maths score still leads to poor performance
Mathematics is cumulative. A learner can be good at some topics and still struggle badly in a foundational strand such as fractions, simultaneous equations, algebraic manipulation, trigonometry, or word problems. If the next assessment focuses on those weak areas, the subject average no longer tells the whole story.

Instead of asking only, “What is the student’s Maths average?” schools should ask, “Which topic is producing repeated low scores?” That question gives direction. It makes intervention specific. It makes revision practical. It also makes parent meetings more useful, because the support plan can explain exactly what needs to be fixed.
Why this matters for school planning
The school does not just need a student label. It needs a learning plan. If one child is weak in geometry and another is weak in graphs, the same broad subject score can hide two very different intervention strategies. Teachers need data at a topic level so they can respond appropriately. School leaders need it so they can monitor whether the intervention is working and whether the class is improving across the term.
For parents, the value is also clear. A parent who hears “your child is struggling in algebraic fractions” can support practice more intelligently than one who hears only “Maths is not very good.” The problem becomes tangible, and the plan becomes actionable.
What good performance tracking looks like
Good tracking does not require a new set of exhaustive tasks. It requires a consistent structure: classwork and assignments should be tagged to a specific topic, topic scores should be reviewed weekly, and repeated low scores should trigger a conversation about method, support, or re-teaching.
When schools use this approach, they stop treating a healthy average as a guarantee of exam success. They start treating the next test as a pattern check. A student whose average is 65% may still need strong support in a particular unit. That is not a contradiction. It is a sign that the school needs a more useful way to read the data.
